Dana interviews Dr Bethan Richards about the awesome changes she has made to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital as its Chief Medical Wellness Officer! Dr Richahards also shares the latest evidence on what it takes to change the culture of medicine for the better.
About the Guest Speaker:
Dr Bethan Richards is a Staff Specialist Rheumatologist, and Head of the Department of Rheumatology at Royal Prince Alfred (RPA) Hospital in Sydney. She is also the Deputy Director of the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health, and Senior Clinical Lecturer with the School of Medicine, University of Sydney. In 2019, following her return from Stanford, Bethan also had the honour of being appointed as Australia’s first Chief Medical Wellness Officer as well as Sydney Local Health District’s inaugural WellMD Centre Director.
Throughout her career, Bethan has had extensive experience and a passion for designing and implementing mentoring, teaching and medical wellbeing programs. In 2017 she led a team that conceptualised and implemented the “BPTOK program” which is now being rolled out to over 3000 doctors in Sydney Local Health District as “MD OK”. In her various roles, Bethan continues to advocate for and lead organisational efforts to address the issue of medical officer burnout and promote a workplace culture that fosters professional wellness for all staff.
